Pro Study Tips

Posted on

In early September as we load our children onto school busses for yet another year of learning, it’s a good time to examine our own study habits and determine how to make the most of our education. Perhaps we feel overwhelmed by school, work, and family obligations, and we make studying a non-priority. Or maybe over the hot, lazy summer we just lost a bit of our studying-motivation. Not to worry! As autumn brings with it changing leaves and cooling weather, it can also allow us the opportunity to reset and reconnect with our academic goals. Below are ten tips to help you on your quest for a successful school year

Take notes in class: There are innumerable benefits to note-taking. Sometimes it’s as simple as keeping you engaged in an otherwise boring lecture. In fact, studies show that the physical act of writing triggers your brain to pay closer attention. Taking notes can also help you visualize information, can keep you alert in class, and gives you a handy study guide for that quiz or test in the upcoming weeks.

Review your notes as soon as you can after class: The best way to commit your notes to memory is to review them as soon as you can after class. This will help cement the information and concepts for you. Better still, taking the time to rewrite your notes by organizing them, color-coding them, and drawing connections between the ideas will cut down on study time later in the term. And if you make flashcards for vocab words and other concepts, you can study anywhere and anytime!

Do your homework: This should go without saying, but I’ll repeat it anyway. Do your homework! The purpose of homework is not to give you busy work but to provide you with practice for concepts and information useful to the class. It’s a built-in study session.

Have a dedicated study space free of distractions: What happens when you study in your bed? You probably fall asleep. When you study near the TV? You probably get lured into that most recent Real Housewives episode. Or when you study at the dinner table? If you’re anything like me, you get hungry! We need a dedicated space, whether it’s at home, the library or even school, that is free from the TV, phone, Facebook, and the temptation of sleep or food so that we can dedicate our minds to learning.

Study in small chunks of time: According to Professor Marty Lobdell, a psychology professor at Pierce College, most of us can only study for up to 25 – 30 minutes at a time. Any more than that, and our brains stop processing information. Lobdell says we need “recharge our batteries”. Take a walk, listen to music, or call a friend. The break doesn’t have to be long; even five minutes can ensure we’re reenergized to tackle our school work with gusto.

Sneak in studying: Sometimes we don’t even have a free 30-minute chunk of time to study – that’s okay! We can sneak in 5, 10, 15 minutes of study. When you’re on break from work, riding the bus, waiting at the doctor’s office, or eating a quick breakfast, use those few moments of quiet to review notes or flashcards.

Make sure you take care of yourself: Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise, and drink enough water. When we miss out on crucial sleep, our mood shifts into gloomy-Gus mode, and it becomes difficult to do anything, let alone study. According the LiveStrong.com, eating more fruits and vegetables can lead to improved concentration. And even mild dehydration can impair brain function. On the other hand, regular exercise can improve memory and critical thinking skills.

Have a plan when you sit down to study: Don’t waste the time you do spend studying. Before you begin, know exactly what you want to accomplish. Whether it’s setting to memory this week’s vocabulary words, reading an important chapter, or starting to understand a vital concept, having a game plan will make your study time worthwhile.

Find a study group: Studying with a partner or group has many benefits. Having an outside perspective to help understand a difficult concept can be a grade-saver. In addition, being able to talk about what you’ve learned helps commit it to memory. Plus, two is better than one! Studying with a friend can make a dull subject more exciting.

Reward yourself after you study: Human beings are predictable. We stop doing things we hate and we continue habits that make us feel good. It’s Pavlonian: when you reward yourself for a job well-done, such as taking the time to study, you’ll condition yourself to want to study more. The more you study, the more rewards you get, and consequently, the more you’ll want to study! Plus, you’ll have better grades and set yourself up for success upon graduation and entering the job market. It’s a win-win!

Why Go to College?

Posted on

Last week I was at a soccer game, and a high school student (who knew I worked at Antonelli College) asked a simple question, “Why go to college?  Is it really necessary?”

Going to College Online

I paused before I answered him.

Five-years ago, I wouldn’t have paused.  “Of course,” I would have said, with no doubt or hesitation in my voice. “Go to college!”  The person I was five-years ago would have believed the answer with all my heart and soul.  EVERYONE needed a college education.  College was a crucible where students were magically transformed.  College was a rite of passage.  Students had parties, stayed up late and talked philosophy and politics.  Students were exposed to new music, new entertainment, new experiences, friends, and ideas.  College was coffee shops, late-night cram sessions, pizza and computer labs.

Times change, the world has changed, and I’m a different person.  I once believed going to college was embarking on a heroic adventure, and when you had a degree, jobs fell into your lap and debt was slowly, but magically, wiped clean.

“Why go to college?”  The question was spinning in my mind and making the memories of me five years ago seem so naive.  Now I pondered debt, contemplated current job prospects, gave gainful employment regulations a thought, and considered childcare and commuting costs. I wasn’t considering parties, the “experience,” or late nights discussing philosophy.

Luckily, I stopped myself before I answered.  The truth is, his question wasn’t about a rite of passage, a risk/reward analysis of debt, or my opinion on philosophy.  A party is a memory of our time in college.  We all face potentially difficult job prospects, no matter if we have a degree or not.  Debt is an investment we make in our future, with the expectation of a return.  None of this defines a college experience.

The goal of college is building a better future.  That is why we pay tuition and invest our time and effort.  We go to college in the hopes of creating a better life.  is a tool we use to create a better future.  In college, we seek knowledge, skills, experience, the opportunity to network, build relationships and ourselves.  Considering college like that, then the question is, “Why should we create a better future for ourselves?”  The answer is obvious.

“Yes,” I told him, after a LONG pause, but with no doubt in my mind.

You should go to college, but only if you are ready to make an investment.  To be honest, the five-years-ago me was a fool.  College isn’t a crucible that you dip yourself into.  College is a tool that requires an investment of time and energy.  You have to actively use it, to make an investment of effort.  Some people are happy where they are and don’t see the need to work hard, and that’s fine.  If you can find happiness in your current situation, then there is no reason to invest in the future.  The purpose of college is giving people who want to change their life the resources to change.  We should continually strive for improvement.  College is necessary because our goal should be to make our world a better place.

Looking back, the moment it took to formulate an answer to his question was packed with a lot of thought.  Good thought, I believe.

“Huh,” the High School student replied.  “Cool.”

It was a soccer game, not a late-night college discussion about philosophy.  I really shouldn’t have expected much, but hopefully, I’d made the world a better place with my answer.

Antonelli College Joins National Technical Honors Society and Phi Beta Lambda
Organizations to benefit student engagement

CINCINNATI – Antonelli College is proud to announce the addition of the National Technical Honors Society (NTHS) and Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) to the list of student focused organizations on campus.

“I am pleased to offer students the chance to expand their horizons through involvement with the National Technical Honors Society and Phi Beta Lambda,” said Executive Campus Director Karen Gautreau. “Both organizations are synonymous with excellence in the education process and beyond into professional industries.”

The National Technical Honors Society recognizes student achievement in career and technical education. Charters are granted to high schools and two-year colleges offering career and technical programs. Antonelli College is one of 119 educational institutions in Ohio with a charter and one of nine in the Queen City.

Students working toward their Associate of Applied Business in Information Technology with a 3.0 GPA and above will be eligible for membership. As a member of the National Technical Honors Society, students will have access to more than $90,000 in scholarships and potential to compete for awards via the Silver Star of Excellence program and Hall of Fame distinction.

“Membership in the NTHS is a perfect reason for students to excel in the classroom. While the member title is something they can boast about professionally for years, the scholarship opportunities offer immediate rewards,” said Lee Foley, Information Technology department chair and NTHS advisor.

Phi Beta Lambda, the post-secondary division of Future Business Leaders of America, reaches over 11,000 college students. Upon their graduation, alumni have the opportunity to continue their commitment to the organization’s mission through the Professional Division.

“Many of our students have entrepreneurial aspirations after graduation; the great thing about PBL is it is offered to all programs, not just those studying business,” noted Christa Eldridge, Hospitality Arts department chair and PBL advisor. “In offering our entire population the chance to participate, those in any program can refine their business and networking skills.”

Antonelli College also inducts academically advanced students into the Alpha Beta Kappa National Honors Society once a year; quarterly students can earn placement on the Dean’s or Director’s List.
